Acute Illness

An acute illness may be harmless, but it could be something more serious, so if your symptoms last for more than a few days, you should go to a doctor to get examined.

Unless you are very lucky, you have probably gotten sick with an acute illness many times in your life. When we say “getting sick,” we’re usually referring to something like the common cold, the flu, or perhaps a stomach bug. Most of the time, the solution is as simple as bed rest and fluids, but certain illnesses are more serious and may require more aggressive treatment.

What Is an Acute Illness?

When we are talking about an acute illness, we are typically talking about a sickness that arrives suddenly as a result of infection, has noticeable symptoms like congestion, cough, aches and pains or fever, and passes in a week or two. Acute illnesses often occur due to contagion, where you have come into contact with someone else suffering from the illness. While many acute illnesses are little more than unpleasant, some can be incapacitating or even life-endangering, depending on the factors involved.

What Causes Acute Illnesses?

Most acute illnesses are caused either by bacteria or viruses. Bacterial infections are usually easily treated by antibiotics. Viruses are more complicated. Different viruses have different structures so the treatment for each one may vary. The best way to deal with a virus is with a vaccine that creates antibodies in your system so you do not get the virus in the first place. Once you have a virus, there may be some antiviral medications that can help, but for the most part, your body has to naturally fight off the illness.

What Do I Do If I Have an Acute Illness?

An acute illness may be harmless, but it could be something more serious, so if your symptoms last for more than a few days, you should go to a doctor to get examined. It’s important to note that practicing good health habits can reduce your likelihood of getting an acute illness and can speed your recovery from such illnesses. This is why we at Kohn Medical & Weight Loss highly recommend you sign up for regular wellness exams, where Dr. Kohn can examine you and make lifestyle recommendations to help you maintain good health.
